Project Overview
Sustain Commercial Solar has successfully installed a comprehensive 285.77 kWp solar PV system for Total Fitness Lincoln, marking a significant step in the fitness centre's journey toward sustainability and energy independence. Located at Whisby Road in Lincoln, this state-of-the-art installation demonstrates how commercial facilities with high energy demands can benefit from renewable energy solutions.
The Challenge
Total Fitness Lincoln, a bustling fitness centre with high energy consumption due to extended operating hours, specialised equipment, and climate control requirements, was facing rising energy costs and seeking to reduce its carbon footprint. With an annual electricity consumption of 449,740 kWh and peak loads of 342 kW, the facility required a substantial renewable energy solution that could significantly offset grid dependency without compromising operations.
The Solution
After thorough site assessment and energy analysis, Sustain Commercial Solar implemented a 285.77 kWp rooftop solar PV system optimised for the facility's unique consumption profile. The completed installation features:
- 697 HT-SAAE HT54-18X-410 solar panels covering 1,361.1 m² of roof space
- Three FoxESS R-series 100 kW inverters with optimised string configurations
- West-facing orientation (248°) with a 5° inclination, maximising afternoon generation when the gym experiences peak usage
- Grid-connected system designed for high self-consumption with export capability
The system was meticulously installed on the building's distinctive cross-shaped roof structure, with careful positioning to minimise shading impacts to just 1.2% yield reduction.
Technical Excellence
The installation showcases several technical innovations:
- Strategic panel placement that works around roof features including skylights and HVAC equipment
- High-efficiency string configuration achieving a performance ratio of 85.71%
- Optimised inverter sizing with sizing factors between 94.7-95.5% for maximum efficiency
- Multiple MPP trackers to minimise the impact of partial shading
Results and Benefits
The solar PV system is delivering impressive performance metrics:
- Annual generation of 252,726 kWh of clean, renewable electricity
- 29.6% self-sufficiency from on-site solar generation
- 52.7% self-consumption rate of generated solar power
- 118,733 kg CO₂ emissions avoided annually, equivalent to taking dozens of cars off the road
- Specific yield of 884.01 kWh/kWp, demonstrating excellent system efficiency
- Reduced grid dependency with 133,113 kWh/year directly consumed on-site
The system's high performance is particularly notable given the west-facing orientation, which aligns generation with the afternoon and evening peak usage patterns typical in fitness facilities.
Energy Flow Visualisation
The energy system design creates a balanced approach to power management:
- During daylight hours, the solar system provides direct power to the facility
- Excess generation of approximately 119,613 kWh annually is exported to the grid
- The facility continues to draw 316,731 kWh from the grid annually, primarily during early morning hours and peak demand periods
Seasonal Performance
The system's performance varies seasonally, with highest generation during summer months:
- Peak production occurs from May through August
- Winter production still contributes meaningfully to the facility's energy needs
- Consumption profile shows highest demand in September, with steady year-round baseline requirements
Environmental Impact
Beyond the financial benefits, the installation delivers substantial environmental advantages:
- 2.97 million kg CO₂ emissions avoided over the system's 25-year lifespan
- Reduced dependence on fossil fuels for electricity generation
- Visible commitment to sustainability with prominently displayed solar panels
